Attack on Former DOGE Employee Sparks Calls for Changes in D.C. Law

A former employee of the Department of Efficiency (DOGE) was assaulted this week during an attempted carjacking in Washington, D.C., prompting President Trump to advocate for renewed control measures in the nation’s capital. Reports indicate there was widespread media coverage of the incident.

The victim, identified as Edward Coristine, was attacked early Sunday by a group of teenagers as well as a 19-year-old software engineer and his companions, who police labeled as his associates, according to the Associated Press.

Police have arrested two 15-year-olds in connection with the attempted carjacking and the assault, as reported by the AP.

Elon Musk, who previously led DOGE initiatives while in government service, addressed the incident on social media, confirming the attack.

“A few days ago, a group of young men attempted to assault a woman in a car at night in D.C.,” Musk stated. “Members of the @Doge team intervened to protect her and suffered serious injuries, including a concussion, but thankfully, they were able to save her.”

In response, Trump has called for legislative changes that would allow minors over 14 to be charged as adults, leading to harsher sentences.

He shared a graphic image of a bloodied former DOGE employee, who, while not specifically named, was suggested to be Coristine. Trump commented on the alarming trend of violent crimes in Washington, which he argues has worsened over recent years. He expressed that he isn’t deterred by potential fallout from his statements.

“They have no fear of law enforcement because they know nothing will happen to them, but that changes now!” Trump wrote. He continues to stress that laws need to be updated so that these “minors” can face serious consequences. He labeled the latest victim as ruthlessly beaten by local assailants.

“Washington, D.C. needs to be safe, clean, and appealing for all Americans and the world to see,” Trump emphasized. “If the city can’t take action quickly, we will assume control of its federal government and will dictate its operations—we won’t bow to criminals any longer.”

Interestingly, crime rates in D.C. have reportedly dropped, reaching a three-decade low, with violent crime down 35% from the previous year in 2024. Current statistics suggest a continuing decline in 2025.

Trump has often hinted at his intention to oversee Washington during his second term, repeatedly expressing concern about crime and homelessness in the area.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) also weighed in, praising Coristine for putting his own safety at risk to help a vulnerable woman. She expressed support for Trump’s potential intervention, stating that D.C. has become “one of America’s most dangerous cities.”

“I back President Trump in taking control of the city to restore law and order,” Greene remarked.
