Federal Agencies Cut Wasteful Contracts
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) announced on Friday that federal agencies have terminated or reduced 55 contracts worth a total of $1.6 billion in just three days, which resulted in savings of $542 million.
DOGE was established early in President Donald Trump’s second term, partly in response to a desire to reform federal spending. While Elon Musk was initially involved, he has since distanced himself from the initiative, though the DOGE framework is still being utilized across various federal agencies.
In a post on X, the department highlighted its achievements, stating, “Contract renewals! Over the past three days, the agency has terminated 55 wasteful contracts, resulting in $1.6 billion in cap value and $542 million in savings.”
Upcoming Funding Cuts Proposal
The White House is expected to forward a $9.4 billion package of funding cuts to Congress next week.
Among the contracts terminated, DOGE mentioned a noteworthy $47 million program support contract from the State Department for armored personnel carriers in Somalia and a $19.5 million contract from HHS for IT services related to environmental health communications.
Moreover, there was a $151,000 educational services agreement for a leadership program at Northwestern University included in the post. Screenshots shared in DOGE’s announcement confirmed these contracts’ details and amounts.
Ongoing Efforts to Reduce Waste
Further documentation in the DOGE post shows federal records about a Somalia-related contract offering specialized support for the Somali National Army, as well as an IT management contract categorized under computer systems design services. This latter contract involves maintaining online communications for the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
Though DOGE provided several examples, the announcement lacked specifics regarding when the contracts were initiated, how much money had already been allocated, or the exact agency actions that led to the cited savings.
This announcement arrives at a time when scrutiny is high, particularly concerning Somali-owned childcare facilities in Minnesota that are currently under investigation for allegedly misappropriating taxpayer funds.
Fox News Digital has reached out to various agencies, including the White House and DOGE, to gather more information on these developments.
