State agencies are working on the possibility of relocation as a lease deadline approach. This does not necessarily mean that all locations will be closed by those dates, but agents will have to negotiate a new lease or move to a different location if they choose to leave it open. The federal real estate portfolio is under scrutiny as Doge and General Services Administration (GSA) accelerate their efforts to cancel underused or unused federal agency and building leases.

The initiative aimed at reducing government real estate holdings has been underway for the past decade. However, recent actions have been strengthened, with Doge claiming potential savings of around $300 million over the terms of the lease, but that figure remains untested.

The move coincides with the Trump administration's instructions for remote federal workers to return to their offices, as well as the implementation of massive layoffs at several agencies, including the GSA.

Government and non-government sources say that at least some of the cancellations on Doge's list have been cancelled, but they have not yet been reflected in the public list. Associated Press.
