DOJ investigating Medicare billing practices at UnitedHealthcare – WSB Atlanta

WASHINGTON, DC – The US Department of Justice is researching the nation's largest health insurance companies.

UnitedHealthcare's billing practices are under investigation, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The research focuses on the company's Medicare Advantage Plan.

This civil fraud investigation considers alleged additional payments based on a Medicare Advantage Plan diagnosis.

As of 2024, over 30 million Americans aged 65 and over are enrolled in the Advantage Plan.

It is more than half of all eligible participants.

Despite their popularity, Channel 2 consumer advisor Clark Howard said traditional Medicare plans were the better choice.

“Some plans aren't making enough money, so they're cutting benefits, so even more important for enrollees next year is to compare available physicians and benefits available under the plan. It makes what we can even more important,” Howard said.

It is important to note that United Healthcare is not the only company offering Medicare Advantage plans.

A spokesman for United Healthcare told Channel 2 that he was unaware of the new probe.

The Justice Department declined to comment on the story.
