DOJ looks into LAUSD for concealing gender identity policy from parents

Documents contradict Democratic assertions regarding Trump’s directive on halting transgender surgery for minors.

The Los Angeles Unified School District, which is the second-largest school district in the U.S. and serves over 500,000 students, is facing federal scrutiny. This follows a policy wherein faculty can keep students’ gender identities from their parents, a situation federal officials say might be linked to a student’s suicide.

The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division recently informed the district about the investigation through a notice, as revealed by public records. This inquiry follows a recent Supreme Court ruling allowing California school districts the discretion to implement policies mandating parental notification if a student is undergoing a gender transition. This ruling is seen as a significant win for the parents who initiated the lawsuit and sends a cautionary note to other states and districts nationwide.

The Civil Rights Office sent a letter on March 25, indicating the investigation was authorized by Director Harmeet Dhillon. In a statement to a newspaper, Dhillon emphasized that the Justice Department would not embrace policies that infringe on parental rights.

In a response to inquiries, Dhillon mentioned that some allegations remain confidential, limiting the details they could share. The letter also referenced a lawsuit from the parents of a high school student who tragically died by suicide, directly attributing the incident to this controversial policy.

The lawsuit was filed by the parents of Dylan Park, who struggled with severe depression and sought help, all while being kept in the dark by the school. They expressed that the school referred Dylan to an external counselor without notifying them, essentially withholding critical information regarding their child’s gender identity to promote gender-affirming care.

When approached for comments on the Department of Justice’s investigation, a spokesperson for the school district stated that, due to the ongoing investigation, they were unable to discuss specific details.
