In response to President Donald Trump’s urgent appeal for swift action, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondy indicated that the Department of Justice might pursue the death penalty for the individual accused of murdering Irina Zaltoska.
Bondy spoke to the media on Wednesday, revealing that DeCarlos Brown Jr., the alleged killer, has been arrested and federally charged. “We made the arrest and have brought federal charges due to the nature of this mass transport murder,” she stated.
“This young woman suffered a horrific and terrifying fate, as we all saw on video,” Bondy remarked, calling the incident “horrifying.” She emphasized the seriousness of the case, explaining, “We will charge, then we will indict, and then we will consider whether to seek the death penalty. It’s certainly a possibility given the nature of his crime.”
Zaltoska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, was fatally attacked while riding a light rail train in Charlotte. The incident occurred on August 22 around 10:30 PM as she was returning home from her job at a pizza place. She was in her work uniform when she encountered Brown, who, after a short period, brandished a knife and fatally stabbed her.
Brown, aged 34, was apprehended shortly after the attack and received medical treatment before being charged with first-degree murder. Authorities confirmed that there was no prior acquaintance between him and Zaltoska.
Bondy noted Brown’s arrest record, which dates back to 2011, including various offenses like felony theft and robbery, although many charges were later dropped.
On Tuesday, Trump condemned the ongoing violence and urged the government to take decisive measures against criminal behavior, stating, “We must be just as ruthless as they are.” He criticized Democratic lawmakers in major U.S. cities for policies he believes allow violent offenders to remain free.
“In Charlotte, North Carolina, I witnessed the consequences of these policies when a 23-year-old woman from Ukraine faced a tragic end on a public train,” he said, referring to Zaltoska’s murder as a brutal act committed by someone with a history of arrests.
Trump expressed concern over rising violence, insisting that the country cannot allow criminal elements to foster chaos and destruction. He stated that a strong response is necessary.
In a social media post, he remarked that the person responsible for Zaltoska’s death deserved a trial that was anything but lenient, mentioning that there should be no alternatives to the death penalty for such a crime.
