The Department of Justice (DOJ) has issued around a dozen subpoenas in their investigation into the immigration status of Democratic Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar, according to a source familiar with the matter.
Among those subpoenaed are Omar’s sister, Sahra Noor, and another family member, as first reported by The New York Times. Federal agents conducted a raid at Omar’s residence on Monday while scrutinizing her immigration documentation and citizenship status.
Grand jury subpoenas are typically used to collect evidence related to potential criminal activity. This particular investigation seeks to determine if Omar’s late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, provided false information or omitted details on immigration applications prior to becoming a U.S. citizen, specifically regarding his daughter’s age.
Omar entered the U.S. in March 1995 at the age of 12 and became a citizen at 17, suggesting the possibility of deriving her citizenship through her parent.
Omar’s office has yet to respond to requests for comments from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
The Trump administration has made recurring allegations against Omar, claiming she committed immigration fraud by marrying her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. Vice President J.D. Vance confirmed in May that the administration was looking into the congresswoman’s situation.
Vance mentioned to the Caller, “It certainly seems like something fishy is there. But everyone is entitled to equal justice under the laws. So we’re going to investigate it. If we think there’s a crime, we’re going to prosecute that crime, and that’s something that the Department of Justice is looking at right now.”
In response, Omar has accused the administration of targeting her politically through unfounded claims and smear tactics.
“I’m okay. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced,” Omar stated in a message on X.
The investigation reportedly involves whistleblowers, documentation, and witness testimonies related to Omar’s immigration status and is being conducted by the Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. attorney in Minneapolis, and the DOJ, as per a source who talked to NBC News.
Trump has criticized Omar during a campaign rally in Ohio, stating, “I don’t know what they’re doing with it, but I can tell you this: She’s a disaster. She comes in from a country without laws, without police, without military, where all they do is shoot each other, and she comes into our country and she says, ‘I have a constitutional right.’”
Additionally, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro has confirmed that her office is looking into Omar’s financial disclosures.
