Dolly Parton has evolved from a small-town girl into a global icon over her 60-year career, and she’s now marking her 80th birthday. Recently, she shared a video expressing her regret at missing the annual Opry Goes Dolly event, which honors her. In the video, she wished everyone a fantastic night and acknowledged how much her fans’ support means to her, even though she couldn’t be there to celebrate in person.
The Grand Ole Opry celebrated her “80s era” on January 17, featuring performances by artists like Laney Wilson and Vince Gill. Meanwhile, reminiscing about her upbringing, Parton grew up in a humble household in Sevierville, Tennessee, as the fourth of twelve siblings in a one-room cabin. Even from an early age, she aspired to a life beyond the Smoky Mountains, expressing a desire to explore the world more broadly.
She fondly recalled how, before her big performances, she would practice with makeshift microphones on her front porch, showcasing her early passion for music. With encouragement from her Uncle Bill, who taught her guitar, she began getting a taste of that dream. By high school, she had already signed a contract, but her early recordings did not pan out as she hoped, leading to her departure from her first record label.
After graduating in 1964, Parton made the move to Nashville, where she met her future husband, Karl Dean. Interestingly, their first encounter involved a somewhat humorous rejection when he declined her date request. Yet, their relationship blossomed quickly, leading to their marriage in 1966 despite the record label’s requests to hold off on their union.
Parton’s career took off in 1967 with her debut album, and her stint on “The Porter Wagoner Show” paved the path for her solo career. Over the years, she achieved iconic status with hits like “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You.” Parton also ventured into acting, landing roles in major films, including “9 to 5.” Moreover, she took charge of her destiny in the ’80s by co-owning Dollywood, a widely popular theme park.
As years progressed, she expanded her influence through initiatives like the Imagination Library, a literacy project for children. Now in her eighth decade, Parton reflects with a sense of gratitude, realizing the sacrifices she made for her successful career. Despite recent health challenges and the loss of her husband in March 2025, she has maintained a resilient spirit and looks forward to new projects, claiming she has “a lot of exciting things” on her horizon.
Highlighting her enduring spirit, she stated she still feels like she’s just getting started. Reflecting on her age, she jokes about not having time to think of herself as aging and instead focuses on her ambitions and goals. As she approaches this new chapter in her life, Parton embraces the journey ahead with enthusiasm.
