Dolly Parton Provides Health Update Following Husband’s Passing
Dolly Parton opened up about her health as she kicked off Dollywood’s 2026 season, sharing that the emotional weight from her husband’s death has affected her physically. Karl Dean, her husband for nearly 60 years, passed away at the age of 82 on March 3, 2025.
During her keynote address, Parton expressed feeling “tired and exhausted” in her mourning, saying, “You know, I’m not on tour. He has had some minor health issues, but we are treating them carefully.” The 80-year-old singer admitted the loss has been draining, particularly after nearly six decades of marriage.
Reflecting on her grief, Parton said, “I was getting tired of grieving for Carl and so many other little things. I just got to the point where I needed to pick myself up, mentally, emotionally, and physically. But everything is fine. It hasn’t slowed me down.”
Despite her struggles, she maintained an upbeat demeanor while celebrating the new season at Dollywood with company president Eugene Norton, even making light-hearted remarks to quash rumors about her romantic life.
After joking that people shouldn’t mistake Norton for her “new husband,” she confessed that she hasn’t begun dating since Dean passed. “I think Karl Dean is waiting for me,” she reflected. “If I showed up at the Pearly Gates with someone else, he wouldn’t like it. He’d say, ‘Who’s that prick? Leave him outside the gates.’
Parton has faced increasing health concerns, which have led to delays in her performance schedule. Fans were worried when she postponed her Las Vegas show, initially set for December 2025, to September 2026 due to ongoing health issues. However, she reassured her followers on social media, stating, “I’m not dead yet!”
Parton and Dean’s relationship began when she was just 18 and he was 21. Though he preferred to stay out of the limelight, Dean was a steadfast support throughout Parton’s illustrious career. Now, she recalls their time together, saying, “Words cannot express the love we have shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.”
