Dolphins let go of Tyreek Hill, may be targets for Rams and Chargers

The recent decision by the Dolphins to release star wide receiver Tyreek Hill has sparked excitement across the league, with teams eager to sign him.

It wouldn’t be a shock to see all three California teams—Los Angeles Rams, 49ers, and Chargers—pursuing him. Despite nearing 32 years old, Hill still brings significant speed and power, assuming he recovers well from his dislocated knee and torn ligament injury from Week 4 of 2025.

These teams are on the lookout for a versatile playmaker who can stretch the field or score from anywhere. Although Hill might not have the same explosive power he once did, he can still be an asset, perhaps complementing the existing talent on the teams.

Throughout his 10-year career, Hill has achieved impressive stats: 819 catches, 11,363 yards, and 83 touchdowns. The Dolphins decided to release him ahead of the new league year, making him available to sign immediately.

During his four seasons in Miami, Hill participated in 54 games, accumulating 340 receptions for 4,733 yards and 27 touchdowns. The Dolphins are restructuring their roster under new coach Jeff Hafley and general manager John Eric Sullivan, seeking to free up significant cap space by also moving edge rusher Bradley Chubb and others.

Hill is anticipated to be a prized asset on the market, even if his previous knee injury delays the start of his 2026 season. Any interested team will likely offer him a contract that includes injury-related incentives.

It would be wise for the Rams, Chargers, and 49ers to act quickly. This way, they can manage his rehabilitation and help him adapt to their systems, aiming to leverage his game-changing abilities, especially later in the season and during the playoffs.

Los Angeles Chargers

First off, the Chargers just brought in former Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel as their offensive coordinator. Hill’s familiarity with McDaniel’s system is a huge plus, as few coaches know his game as well as McDaniel.

The duo had a dynamic relationship in Miami, where Hill had his standout seasons with 119 catches and over 1,700 receiving yards in 2022 and 2023. Tua Tagovailoa may not be a superstar, but he’s got skills, yet Justin Herbert offers a superior ability to push the ball downfield.

While Hill’s speed may have diminished, when he’s healthy, he can still hang with many top players. Partnering him with Herbert and other talented receivers is bound to be exciting. Plus, with tackles Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater back, Herbert should have ample opportunities to unleash deep throws, especially if Hill joins the team.

Financially, the Chargers are in good shape, poised to have about $82 million in cap space.

Los Angeles Rams

Last season, Sean McVay did a remarkable job adjusting his schemes based on available talent, using more three-tight end sets than before and challenging defenses with his robust lineup.

The Rams topped the league in scoring with an impressive 30.5 points per game. Hill’s speed could seamlessly integrate into a lineup that already includes Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, acting not just as a deep threat but also as a versatile player.

With a favorable salary cap situation, having Hill on board should be manageable for the Rams.

San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers find themselves with over $22 million in cap space, a decent position as they consider Hill’s addition.

Hill would thrive in Kyle Shanahan’s offensive schemes, potentially serving as a decoy, deep threat, and screen option. He might be a suitable replacement for Brandon Aiyuk, who seems to be nearing the end of his time in San Francisco, as general manager John Lynch hinted recently.

If Hill is healthy, his presence could indeed more than compensate for the likely loss of Aiyuk.
