Injury Shakes Miami Dolphins Training Camp
On Wednesday, during the second day of Miami Dolphins training camp, a distressing incident unfolded as players were airlifted to hospitals. It was an unsettling scene for both the team and fans.
Offensive lineman Byron Matos sustained an injury toward the end of practice. He was promptly transported to a nearby hospital, where reports indicated he was in stable condition. However, details about the nature of his injury remain unclear, which, of course, has left many concerned.
Interestingly, Matos wasn’t drafted last year; he spent the previous season on the practice squad. Prior to joining the Dolphins, he played college basketball at the University of New Mexico and the University of South Florida from 2019 to 2022. It’s kind of fascinating how his journey transitioned from basketball to football—he actually started off as a defensive lineman before making the switch to offensive tackle during his last college season.
Born in the Dominican Republic, Matos relocated to the U.S. at 16. Even though he originally played baseball as a child, basketball ultimately became his sport of choice. According to reports, he made quite an impression at his pro day before the draft, clocking a 4.88-second 40-yard dash at over 300 pounds. If he had competed at the NFL Scouting Combine, his time would have ranked as the fastest among linemen—pretty remarkable.
Matos is also part of the NFL’s International Player Pathway program, which aims to boost the representation of players from outside North America in the league. This adds an interesting dimension to his career. Now, looking ahead, there’s anticipation for the Dolphins’ practices to open to fans, starting Saturday. Until then, everyone’s hoping for the best for Matos and the team as they move forward.
Wednesday’s practice was closed to the public, but the Dolphins will soon offer fans more access as training camp continues.
