Tagovailoa's re-concussion on national television stunned players and fans alike, with former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant, Super Bowl-winning kicker Lawrence Tynes and Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe all questioning whether Tagovailoa needed to think about his future.

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was asked after the team's loss to the Buffalo Bills if he thought Tagovailoa was safe to play football.

“I don't get involved in anything that is far outside my area of expertise from a medical standpoint. Like I said before, I'm just there to support my teammates,” McDaniel told reporters. “I don't think it's appropriate to make predictions that I don't know about in areas that are not my area of expertise.”

“We will have more information tomorrow on Tua's condition. He will be evaluated at length and then we will have a proper discussion and update. He was around the locker room, interacting with his teammates as a leader and trying to lift the morale of the rest of the team. He will be in the office tomorrow to receive the proper treatment.”

Tagovailoa appeared to suffer a concussion during a 2022 home game against the Bills, but it was determined to be a back injury after he stumbled after hitting his head hard on the ground during a play.

Just a few days later, in Week 4 against the Bengals, Tagovailoa was thrown to the turf at Cincinnati's Pacol Stadium, creating the disturbing scene of his hand sticking out, something that sometimes happens with head injuries that cause the fingers to curl.
