Dolphins’ Tyreek Hill doubles down on demand for officer to be fired: ‘He gotta go’

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill stood by his position that the officers who took control over the handling of his detention over the weekend should be fired.

When asked about the incident at a news conference Wednesday, Hill made a gesture with his left arm as if to shoo the person away.

“He's gone. He's gone. He's gone. He's gone. He's gone. He's got to go,” he said. “Because not only did he treat me badly, he treated my teammates badly. He said crazy things to them and they didn't do anything. What did they do to you? They were just walking down the sidewalk. He's got to go.”

“It's not often that 'Cheetah' tells people to get out, but you… get out. Get out!”

Miami-Dade Police identified the officer assigned to administrative duties as Danny Torres, a 27-year veteran of the police force.

Torres' lawyers issued a statement Monday calling for him to be reinstated.

“While we believe the decision to place our client on administrative leave was premature, we respect Director Daniels' request for a thorough investigation of the incident involving Tyreek Hill and we fully support that position,” the lawyers said. “We urge all involved to refrain from making public statements that misrepresent our client's actions and mislead the public about Mr. Hill's detention.”

“We seek, as Director Daniels has also advocated, the immediate reinstatement of our client and a full, thorough and objective investigation. Our client will not comment until this investigation is concluded and the facts are fully known.”

Hill also acknowledged Wednesday that he thought he could have acted differently in that moment.

“I could have opened the window at that moment,” he said, “but I don't want attention. I don't want cameras pointed at me, I don't want phones pointed at me at that moment. But at the end of the day, I'm a human being. I have to follow the rules. I have to do what everybody else does.”

“So does that give them the right to literally beat me up? Absolutely not. But at the end of the day, I wish I could go back in time and do some things differently.”
