Dolton, Illinois Mayor Tiffany Henyard (D-Ill.) vetoed the investigation during a heated board meeting Monday. She is accused of mishandling her funds, wrongful termination, and concealing a sexual assault against her former employee, among other charges.
At one point during the meeting, Henyard even got into a shouting match with one of the board members. The audience also participated.
Several community members were again excluded from the meeting due to lack of seats, but outsiders made sure to call for Henyards’ resignation.
This was the board’s first meeting since hiring Lightfoot (D-Ill.).
Henyard said the board overstepped its authority.
“You know it’s a veto,” Henyard said. “So you think you can come to someone else’s town and start a job or something? Even if we say something that says it’s illegal, we cite the laws and everything that’s here. and she is not paid for her services.”
Directors are expected to try to override Henyard’s veto at the next board meeting. It is scheduled for later this month.
