Dominiq Ponder from Colorado Sadly Passes Away in Car Accident at 23

Tragic Death of Colorado Buffaloes Quarterback

Dominic Ponder, quarterback for the Colorado Buffaloes, sadly passed away in a single-car accident early Sunday morning. He was just 23 years old.

“The entire CU Athletics family is heartbroken by the untimely loss of Dominick Ponder,” said Fernando Lobo, the Athletic Director at Colorado State, in an official statement. “He embodied passion, enthusiasm, leadership, toughness, and intelligence, earning the respect of both teammates and coaches. Our thoughts are with his family and teammates during this tough time.”

The accident occurred around 3 a.m. in Boulder County, according to the Colorado State Patrol. Reports indicate that a driver lost control of a 2023 Tesla Model 3 while navigating a curve, crossing into oncoming traffic, striking a guardrail, crashing into a power line pole, and ultimately rolling down an embankment, where it caught fire.

Ponder was declared dead at the scene. Authorities mentioned that initial findings suggest speed could have played a role in the crash, but further investigation is forthcoming.

Initially from Opa Locka, Florida, Ponder had been with the Buffaloes for the past two seasons after transferring from Bethune-Cookman. During the 2025 season, he participated in two games, making one pass attempt and two rushing plays, but did not compete in 2024.

“Dom was one of my favorites!” expressed Colorado head coach Deion Sanders. “He was loved, respected, and a born leader. Let us keep in our thoughts all who were fortunate enough to know him. Lord, you’ve gained a remarkable soul.”
