Don Mattingly resigning from position as Blue Jays bench coach: report

Don Mattingly Steps Away from Blue Jays, Yet Plans to Continue in Baseball

After participating in his first World Series, spanning over 40 years in baseball, Don Mattingly has made a significant decision regarding his career. The bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays will not be returning to the team once his contract ends, as reported by the New York Post.

Mattingly started his major league career in 1982 with the New York Yankees. He quickly became a standout player, though ironically, he didn’t experience any postseason success. The Yankees didn’t reach the playoffs until 1995, his final season with the team.

In his one and only postseason appearance, Mattingly managed an impressive .400 batting average. However, he retired shortly after, while the Yankees claimed victory in four of the following five World Series games. Interestingly, it was the Blue Jays who knocked the Yankees out at home on their way to winning the championship for the first time since 1992.

Despite stepping away from his position with the Blue Jays, Mattingly doesn’t seem ready to retire fully. Reports suggest he is looking at other opportunities, with only the Colorado Rockies’ managerial role still available in the league.

During his three seasons with the Blue Jays, Mattingly supported manager John Schneider. He joined the Blue Jays a year after Schneider was hired. A six-time All-Star and recipient of nine Gold Glove Awards, Mattingly also won the MVP Award in 1985. After his playing days, he served as a hitting coach and bench coach for the Yankees before moving on to the Los Angeles Dodgers under manager Joe Torre. He held that position for five seasons before managing the Miami Marlins from 2016 to 2022.

The Marlins even made it to the postseason in 2020, which was quite the achievement given the circumstances.
