Trump Announces Peace Treaty Between Congo and Rwanda

President Donald Trump stated on Friday that a peace treaty has been established between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of Rwanda, calling it “a wonderful day for the world.”

In a post on Truth Social, he mentioned that he and Secretary of State Marco Rubio had been working to facilitate a “great treaty” between the two nations. He added that representatives from both countries will arrive in Washington, D.C. on Monday “to sign the documents.”

“We are very pleased to report, alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio, about a great treaty arranged between these two countries,” Trump wrote, referring to Rwanda, which has a history marked by significant violence and loss of life.

While noting his role in securing the treaty, Trump expressed disappointment that he wouldn’t receive the Nobel Peace Prize for mediating efforts to avert conflicts between India and Pakistan. He mentioned that Pakistan nominated him for the prize due to his attempts to maintain peace in that region.

“It seems we won’t be honored with the Nobel Peace Prize for stopping the Serbia-Kosovo conflict or for facilitating peace between Egypt and Ethiopia,” he commented, suggesting that U.S. involvement in such issues has often been undermined. He also anticipated that other nations would join in to unify the Middle East under a new agreement called “The Ages.”

According to reports from Breitbart News, during his first term, the U.S. was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for its role in the Serbia-Kosovo negotiations.

In January 2024, Trump was again nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize while pursuing the Abraham Accord in the Middle East.

The agreement, based on principles established in a dialogue that occurred over three days, was formalized by the U.S., Rwanda, and the DRC, as mentioned in the official statement.

The joint statement outlined that the treaty includes commitments to respect territorial integrity and to prohibit hostilities, alongside provisions for the disarmament and integration of non-state armed groups. It also aims to establish a joint security framework and support the return of refugees while facilitating humanitarian access and regional economic cooperation.

A press release from the State Department indicated that “Technical Teams of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of Rwanda” have formally started the peace agreement’s initial text.
