Donald Trump and Roger Goodell reveal that Washington, D.C. will host the NFL Draft in 2027.

The NFL Draft is set to take place in Washington, D.C., in 2027.

This announcement was made by President Donald Trump on Monday at the White House, alongside NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Josh Harris of the Washington Commanders, and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser.

The draft will be hosted at the National Mall, which is quite an iconic location.

“It seems like a fantastic location… we’re excited to bring it back home,” Trump commented.

Since 2015, the draft has been hosted in various cities, a departure from the league’s long tradition of holding the event at Radio City Music Hall in New York for nearly 50 years.

After its stint in New York, the draft has traveled to cities including Chicago, Philadelphia, Arlington, Nashville, Cleveland, Las Vegas, Kansas City, Detroit, and Green Bay.

This event has proven economically beneficial for the host city, drawing in large crowds each year. In fact, Detroit saw record attendance of 750,000 in 2024.

Washington will host the draft following Pittsburgh, which is set to organize the 2026 event.

This hosting opportunity aligns with the Commanders’ revitalization under new owner Josh Harris, as the team is bouncing back from a tough era. Recently, they celebrated their first playoff victory in 19 years, thanks to rookie quarterback Jayden Daniel, and made it to the NFC Championship game.

Moreover, there was a positive development last week when the Commanders and D.C. officials finalized plans for a new stadium on the old RFK Stadium grounds.

Washington played at RFK from 1961 until 1996, during which time they secured three Super Bowl wins. After that, they relocated to Landover, Maryland, where they’ve played since.

Now, the team will build a modern stadium on the RFK site, which will be part of a larger redevelopment plan.

“The planned stadium, featuring about 65,000 seats, is expected to open in 2030 and will only occupy a small fraction of the site,” the team shared. “In addition to the stadium, we will be focusing on revitalizing the surrounding areas, including restaurants, entertainment, hotels, and green spaces.”

The overall project is expected to create around 5,000 to 6,000 housing units, with at least 30% designated for affordable options.
