President-elect Donald Trump's confidence in House Speaker Mike Johnson, who will lead the Republican conference next cycle, appears to be worsening.
Mr. Trump has great influence within the House Republican Party, and if Mr. Trump signals, the party could oust Mr. Johnson as Speaker.
President Trump has not yet abandoned Johnson, but on Thursday he began to move against Trump by not committing to remain chairman.
President Trump: “Let’s take a look.” said NBC News' Garrett Haak spoke about his confidence in Johnson.
“What they did yesterday was unacceptable. … In many ways, it was unacceptable. It's a Democratic trap,” Trump added of the pork-filled spending package.
Trump offered Johnson a way to keep his job. The roadmap appears to set out a reasonable set of demands for a spending package. But given the possibility of a government shutdown before Christmas, President Trump's demands could be difficult to achieve, effectively hurting Johnson's position.
There is a revolt within the Republican Party aimed at ousting Mr. Johnson. Because of the slim incoming Republican House majority, Mr. Johnson only needs to lose one Republican vote to remain speaker in early January. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) has already said he will not vote for Johnson.
Flashback: Finally! Republican Mike Johnson elected as new Speaker of the House
