Trump Addresses West Point Cadets
President Donald Trump opened his speech to West Point cadets on Saturday by stating he “has the brightest heart,” paired with “a brave heart and the noblest soul.”
This marked his return to West Point for an opening address, having previously spoken there in 2020.
“Every cadet in front of me should savor this moment because today is unforgettable,” he remarked.
He continued, “Soon, you’ll be graduates of the most elite and celebrated military academy in history, poised to become some of the most influential military officers the world has seen. I’ve worked to rebuild that army, so I understand the significance of this moment.”
Trump highlighted cadets with outstanding credentials, including four Rhodes scholars and Army football quarterback Bryson Daily, as well as cadets who set records during an 18.5-mile march in severe cold. He specifically noted Cadet Chris Verdugo, who completed the trek in 2 hours and 30 minutes, breaking his earlier record by 13 minutes.
Trump invited both Daily and Verdugo to join him on stage.
“I’m heading to Army football. H4, H4. I can’t wait to graduate. Love you all,” Daily expressed enthusiastically.
He emphasized that while many peers might pursue NFL careers, Daily has chosen to focus on becoming an infantry officer.
“While other top college quarterbacks considered professional play, Bryson was focused on his military career,” Trump remarked, quoting Daily’s earlier interview about his aspirations.
“So, Bryson, you made the right choice; that’s true service,” he added.
Verdugo, during his moment, expressed gratitude towards his classmates, stating he couldn’t have achieved his success without their support.
In a light-hearted moment, Trump jested about seven cadets, referring to them as “men of the century.” He told the audience, “In tradition, I’m here to grant some leniency regarding minor activist offenses, so you all are good to go,” eliciting cheers from the crowd.
Later in his address, he reiterated the pride associated with being a West Point alumnus, affirming they possess not just “the brightest heart,” but also “brave hearts and noble souls.”
“I couldn’t be prouder to serve as your commander,” he concluded.
