Donald Trump guarantees extensive campaign travel for the GOP midterms

Even though he’s not running this year, former President Donald Trump has pledged to actively support Republican candidates during the midterm elections.

While speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump discussed his intention to campaign extensively, aiming to help Republicans maintain their slim majority in the House and their control of the Senate. “We’re going to work hard,” he emphasized.

Interestingly, Trump seems to have low expectations when it comes to Republican performance at the polls, recognizing that the party in power often faces challenges in midterm elections. “There’s a psychological reason,” he noted, acknowledging the struggle incumbents typically face during these election cycles.

Recently, Trump made appearances in critical states like Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Michigan, where he highlighted his successes during his first term and addressed concerns about rising prices—an issue that voters care about deeply.

Looking ahead, he plans to visit Iowa next week, where the GOP aims to secure open Senate and governor seats in the upcoming elections.

Trump’s political allies confirmed last month that he would make regular campaign appearances this year. Notably, Chief of Staff Susie Wiles indicated that Trump intends to take on a more involved role in the campaign trail compared to his previous term, where he didn’t start campaigning until after Labor Day. In 2018, Republicans lost control of the House, but Trump is determined to avoid a repeat of that outcome.

A key part of his strategy involves holding the first midterm Republican convention this year. As reported, the Republican National Committee took initial steps to update party rules during a recent meeting, allowing Chairman Joe Gruters to organize a special convention outside of the presidential campaign period.

Traditionally, national conventions are held during presidential election years to formally nominate candidates, but the hope among Trump and Republican leaders is that this midterm convention can provide a platform to showcase Trump’s record and support for congressional candidates.

However, there are concerns over low voter turnout among Trump supporters, particularly since he won’t be on the ballot. Gruters described Trump as a “secret weapon,” stressing that energizing the base is crucial. “No one can energize our voters better than Trump,” he added.

Trump has also emphasized his successes over the past year, claiming, “No one has had a better first year than me.” He highlighted the strength of the economy and unprecedented investments made during his administration.

Despite these claims, Trump’s approval ratings remain low. Criticism has emerged from the opposing side, with a Democratic National Committee spokesperson arguing that voters will remember Trump’s actions going into the midterm elections, suggesting that Republicans will face the consequences.
