Despite its status as a traditional battleground state, Democrats are not treating Florida as such in the 2024 election cycle, given Trump’s overwhelming dominance in a state that has remained strongly Republican over the past few years and even experienced its own small Republican wave in the 2022 elections. Even traditionally Democratic Miami-Dade County tipped Republican toward both Gov. Ron DeSantis and Sen. Marco Rubio in that election year.
In June, the Biden campaign was thrown into disarray when campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon said Florida wasn’t a battleground state for President Joe Biden, who was still campaigning at the time, but the campaign’s battleground states director quickly tried to save face, insisting Florida was “definitely on the ballot.”
The results are consistent with the reality that Republicans are approaching a 1 million voter registration advantage in Florida, a trend that began in November 2021.
