As a priority on his first day in office, President Trump described the federal death penalty as appropriate for police killers, pedophiles and “major drug traffickers.”
“Of course we will. We will execute major drug dealers,” Trump said. Daily Mail“I would probably approve of child rape and the murder of a police officer. I would probably enforce the death penalty on those who violently kill people.”
During President Trump's first term, the federal death penalty was reinstated in 2019, resulting in the execution of 13 federal death row inmates before President Joe Biden's Attorney General Merrick Garland announced a moratorium on executions in 2021.
During a visit to the US-Mexico border last week, President Trump issued a stern warning that drug traffickers involved in fentanyl overdose deaths should be punished with the death penalty for murder.
“The average drug dealer will kill 500 people in his lifetime. I have no problem with that. If you want to stop the drug epidemic, you need the death penalty,” Trump said.
Currently, 27 of the 50 states retain the right to carry out the death penalty, and seven have suspended executions.
In her 2004 inaugural speech as San Francisco's district attorney, Harris vowed to “never impose the death penalty,” but it's an issue she changed her stance on when she ran for California attorney general in 2010. She later backtracked, saying she would “carry out the death penalty according to the provisions of the law.”
