Sophie Cunningham’s Controversial Spotlight in WNBA
Sophie Cunningham unexpectedly became a focal point of the 2026 WNBA season, but not for her skills on the court. Her remarks regarding trans athletes to ESPN triggered a significant controversy, igniting a national dialogue and unrest at games across the nation, even though there are, statistically, fewer than 10 trans athletes competing at the college level out of a whopping 510,000. Before her comments, Cunningham’s notoriety had already begun to eclipse her gameplay, but she swiftly became an overnight figure in conservative circles because of her statements. Later, her team, the Indiana Fever, was knocked out in the first round of the WNBA Playoffs.
President Donald Trump mentioned Cunningham, seemingly out of nowhere, during a rally on Monday night. However, it wasn’t exactly a commendation of her playing abilities. In typical Trump fashion, he went off on a strange tangent, claiming WNBA teams would only pursue Cunningham for her looks, suggesting she could boost attendance. It raises a question—does he genuinely lack an appreciation for the role players who contribute in other ways? It certainly seems that way.
Trump remarked, “Any time a politician says a woman is beautiful, that’s generally the end of his political career in the modern-day political world, but Sophie is a beautiful young woman. You probably wouldn’t mind her on the team, not to help you with points, but to help you with attendance. The attendance would be good.”
Let’s be clear: Cunningham isn’t a star player. The Fever boasts other talent, such as Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, and soon-to-be free agent Kelsey Mitchell. Cunningham has a specific role as an enforcer, providing protection for Clark on defense and creating space for her on offense. She averaged just 7.9 points per game this year, though she did shoot a decent 41.9 percent from beyond the arc.
It’s important to recognize that Cunningham isn’t the All-Star some conservatives portray her as, yet she isn’t quite the inadequate player that many on the left might claim. In fact, she serves as a solid role player and is one of the notable three-point shooting forwards in the league. Most teams would likely appreciate having a player like her—provided she isn’t stirring up controversy off the court without just cause.
Trump has always had an affinity for star power, so it’s not shocking that he would downplay Cunningham’s on-court contributions. However, it’s disheartening to see him trivialize a professional athlete by focusing solely on her appearance and overlooking her role on the team. This behavior is quintessentially Trump, in many ways.
