President-elect Donald Trump on Friday reiterated his support for House Speaker Mike Johnson's bid to remain speaker of the House.
President Trump seems confident that Johnson is the man to lead House Republicans for at least the first two years of his second administration.
Not all House Republicans are impressed with Johnson. Mr Johnson tried to pass a huge pork-filled spending bill in December. A much smaller bill was passed with Democratic support after President Trump pressured Johnson to scale back the bill.
Most notably, Johnson has so far rushed through the reauthorization of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) with few amendments or steps to protect Americans from a weaponized deep state. . The Obama-Biden administration issued a FISA warrant to spy on the Trump campaign in 2016. Mr Johnson explained that his apparent overturning of controversial surveillance laws was based on secret meetings with intelligence officials.
President Trump: “I wish Speaker of the House Mike Johnson the best of luck today. He's a great person with great ability and someone I have very close to 100% support for.'' Posted True Social Friday Morning.
Voting for the chairman is expected to take place around noon on Friday.
“Mike's victory today will be a huge victory for the Republican Party and will once again confirm the most important presidential election in 129 years!!” Trump wrote. “Yes, that's a big affirmation. Maga!”
Mr. Johnson's Republican majority is so thin that some conservatives have expressed doubts and have spoken publicly about whether he should remain speaker.
Punchbowl News points out that Johnson has a single-digit majority. unstable position:
Latest work. Mr Johnson made phone calls and held meetings in his office in Parliament House on Thursday in an effort to increase his vote count. Johnson met with members of the House Freedom Caucus, including Roy and other Republicans. ralph norman (SC) and victoria spatz (Indiana), and it has not yet been announced whether either will support the Louisiana Republican Party again.
During the meeting, Hardliners laid out a number of process reforms they wanted to see, while exposing a variety of grievances against Johnson. These include, inter alia, guarantees regarding expenditure reductions, payments and the use of so-called suspension calendars. Mr Johnson told reporters he was “open” to some of these ideas.
Still the most controversial topic What has been discussed so far has been whether Prime Minister Boris Johnson should appoint Roy to chair the rules committee. Sources said this was one of the demands of some of the Freedom Caucus resistance groups. Member of Parliament lauren boebert (R-Koro) Sae brought it up publicly He said this in an interview with OANN. We wrote about Roy's rise to rule advocacy chair Thursday morning.
