Donalds defends decision to host RNC convention in Milwaukee amid Trump comments

Rep. Byron Donald (R-FL) strongly supported the Republican National Committee’s (RNC) decision to hold its national convention in Milwaukee, despite former President Trump’s reported recent comments about the city.

“In terms of Milwaukee, he was talking about the allegations of voter fraud and the crime rate, and I think it’s important for people to understand that while the murder rate may be going down, that doesn’t mean violent crime or anything like that is going down,” Donald said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

He also said the RNC and Trump were heading to Milwaukee because voters were “disgruntled.”

“The reason the Republican National Committee and President Trump want to go to Milwaukee is because they know there are voters in Wisconsin, just like voters across the country, who are unhappy with what’s happened to our country under Joe Biden’s administration,” he said.

“Immigration is skyrocketing and out of control. The labor market is decent but not great. Inflation-adjusted wages are falling. People are struggling to make ends meet in Joe Biden’s America and the president is sending that message everywhere,” he said.

Trump’s campaign and supporters rushed to his defense after reports surfaced last week that he had called Milwaukee a “terrible” city. The campaign quickly clarified the comments, saying that his calling Milwaukee a “terrible” city was a “total lie.”

“President Trump was specifically referring to issues in Milwaukee, specifically violent crime and voter fraud,” Trump campaign spokesman Dylan Johnson said in a statement last week.

Trump also denied comments he made about Milwaukee on Truth Social over the weekend, saying Democrats are “making up a story.”

The Republican National Convention will be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, next month, where they are expected to formally nominate Trump as their presidential candidate. The convention will begin just four days after Trump is sentenced in his hush money lawsuit.
