Democratic donors are worried that the money they gave to support President Joe Biden is being wasted, according to Reuters, Axios and other media outlets. The New York Times Report on conversations with Biden campaign donors.
Donors’ anxieties appear to underscore deep doubts about Biden’s political viability following his abysmal performance in the debate and a roughly five-minute speech on Monday in which he didn’t answer any questions and turned orange in the face.
The Biden campaign’s national finance committee has been holding conference calls with donors in recent days, with four donors participating in Monday’s call. Said Axios:
- “It was a damage control call,” one participant said.
- “I don’t know what the path forward is, and I think they’re exploring that,” another donor told Axios. “We all just saw what we saw.”
The campaign has received numerous “tough” questions about whether Biden can survive the November election. A source told Reuters on a second call with donors on Sunday that the question was “can the president survive the campaign and another term?”
The call on Sunday, which lasted about 40 minutes, became tense when a donor asked Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez whether he would be willing to refund his money if Biden dropped out of the race, a person familiar with the call told Reuters.
“Some of us on the call privately discussed whether we should redirect our money elsewhere,” one donor was quoted as saying. “The last few days have been very disappointing.”
But the Biden campaign tried to argue that the polls did not indicate Biden should drop out of the election.
But a USA Today/Suffolk University poll conducted Monday found that 41% of Democrats want Biden to drop out of the race, while just 51% want him to remain in the race.
The survey will be one of the first post-debate polls that Democratic activists and donors will study to gauge the extent to which Biden’s candidacy was damaged by his debate performance.
“Everyone just needs to breathe through their nose for one minute,” said Chris Korge, finance chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Said At the end of the call, The New York Times report.
“The media went to great lengths to hype this!” said Quentin Foulkes, Biden’s deputy campaign manager. Said on the phone.
“He’s probably healthier than most of us!” co-chair Jen O’Malley Dillon asserted.
The Biden campaign sent in a top intern to defend Biden’s dismal debate performance.
