Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) briefly detailed to reporters during a visit to El Salvador on Friday afternoon, where he encountered a man who was mistakenly deported in mid-March.
Confronted with a tough struggle against Salvadoran authorities, Van Hollen requested a meeting with Kilmer Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident sent to one of the harshest prisons in Central America. Democrats criticized President Trump and the administration for not facilitating his return following a Supreme Court directive requiring them to do so.
The interaction between Senator Van Hollen and Abrego Garcia occurred on Thursday after he had been denied twice the chance to speak with him either personally or via phone.
Both Trump and Salvadoran President Naive Buqueke stated they would not facilitate Abrego Garcia’s return to the US, but Van Hollen protested following his trip.
A press conference is set to commence at 4 PM EDT.
