Doug Ford on additional Trump tariffs: Canadians will 'not back down'

Ontario Premier Doug Ford, during an interview that Canada “will not retreat,” he fought back against President Trump following his latest pledge to double tariffs on steel and aluminum, calling on his commander to focus on China on behalf of his Northern US neighbors.

“We won't back down. We'll be relentless. President Trump apologises to the Americans for his decision to undergo unprovoked attacks on our country, family and work. Let's work together. Ford appeared on MSNBC on Tuesday and if he has any issues, go to the table,” Ford said.

Ford warned that if the tariff war between Washington and Ottawa continues, U.S. factories could face closures. The Ontario Prime Minister also urged Americans and business executives to oppose recent taxation.

“You see the markets falling. Consumer confidence is declining and if you continue to do this, Michigan assembly plants will be closed and anyone who makes cars and businesses across the country will hurt and beat these pensions.

“But we need to speak up to the American people. We need a CEO to actually get the backbone and stand in front of him and tell him that this is a disaster,” the prime minister added.

Trump said Tuesday that the Ontario government has doubled planned tariffs on steel and aluminum from 25% to 50% after it imposed an electricity surcharge a day ago, affecting three USes.

The commander threatens to slap more taxes on Ottawa, and his administration plans to implement mutual tariffs on April 2nd on all countries that have taxes on US goods. That includes the president “permanently shutting down Canadian car manufacturing” and the president will also have an additional levy on cars.

Ontario said it will affect Michigan, New York and Minnesota, with an additional 25% of electricity exports starting Monday. Additional taxes affect around 1.5 million homes and businesses, costing up to $400,000 per day.

Ford said Tuesday that tariffs would damage US manufacturing.

“We need aluminum. You need our high quality nickel and I want to send more premium nickel. You need our electricity. You need 4.3 million barrels of oil to be shipped. Ford said, “It makes no sense to fight this way, but we will respond appropriately. … Stay tuned.”

Trump appeared to be denying Ontario's recent electricity surcharge. Canada is a tariff “abuser” and Washington will regain its money once mutual taxation comes into effect on April 2nd.

“Because our tariffs are mutual, we'll just get everything back on April 2. Canada is a tariff abuser and has always been, but the US will no longer subsidize Canada,” Trump wrote Monday night about the Truth Society. “We don't need your car, we don't need your wood, we don't do your energy, and soon, you will find it. Make America great again!!!”

If both North American countries enter a recession, Ford said only Trump should be criticized. He also said that both sides should resolve trade seesaws through consultations, as the long-term fight would hurt both Americans and Canadian families.

“And it's not just the US and Canada. It's going to affect the whole world. China has taken over the important mineral sector all over the world, as we've all been sleeping for the past decade,” Ford told MSNBC's Ana Cabrera.

“But there is one area that has more important minerals than anywhere else in the world. It is Ontario and we want to make sure we go to our close friends and allies and protect the US and Canada,” he added.
