Ontario Premier Doug Ford stated on Thursday that President Trump may be viewed as one of Canada’s least favorable politicians amid ongoing trade disputes between the two nations.
“What do Canadians generally think of Trump?” asked CNN’s Wolf Blitzer during The Situation Room.
“He might just be the most disliked politician here, as it feels like he’s attacking a family member,” Ford responded.
He also mentioned his discussions with governors, senators, and Congressional members, noting his opposition to Trump’s policies, though he found them rather intimidating.
Earlier in the week, Ford indicated that he suspects Trump will begin reassessing the US-Mexico-Canada agreement earlier than scheduled in 2026, expressing his distrust in the president.
“I don’t think he’ll wait until 2026. We know President Trump doesn’t always adhere to the established protocols,” he remarked.
On Sunday, Canadian Trade Minister Dominique LeBlanc conveyed hope regarding trade agreements between Ottawa and Washington, despite Trump’s indication of implementing a 35% tariff on Canadian goods.
“We were disappointed by this decision. However, we believe there is significant opportunity for collaboration in establishing robust economies for both nations,” LeBlanc stated during an interview with CBS News.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized to the public that Canada remained committed to enhancing its industrial capabilities.
“As we strive for a new trade deal with the US, we are equally focused on strengthening our domestic industries,” Carney expressed in a post on Social Platform X.
“Together, we are reinforcing both our domestic and international trade partnerships—removing barriers between regions and supporting our industries and workers in adapting to new market demands,” he added.
