Doug Martin’s Family Discusses Mental Health Issues Following His Death

Doug Martin’s family shared that he faced “mental health issues” prior to his tragic passing over the weekend. This statement was released on Monday evening, providing details about events leading up to his death while in police custody in Oakland.

In a statement issued through his agent, Brian Murphy, the family expressed, “Doug has privately battled with mental health issues that have significantly affected his personal and professional life. Ultimately, mental illness has proven to be the one adversary Doug could not overcome.”

This announcement came after news that Martin had been arrested on suspicion of home invasion in Oakland and was in police custody when he died.

The family requested clarification on the circumstances surrounding his death. They noted, “Doug’s parents were actively seeking medical assistance for him and had contacted local authorities for help. Overwhelmed and disoriented, Doug fled his home at night and entered a neighbor’s residence two doors down, where he was subsequently taken into police custody. An investigation is ongoing regarding the events while he was in custody.”

Authorities previously reported that a “brief struggle” occurred as officers attempted to restrain Martin. The statement from the Oakland Police indicated, “Mr. Martin became unresponsive after being taken into custody. Paramedics responded, provided medical aid, and transported Mr. Martin to a local hospital, where he later died.”

The incident is currently under investigation by several agencies, including the OPD Homicide Unit and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, as required by department policy.

At the time of his passing, Martin was just 36 years old. He gained fame at Boise State, where he accumulated over 3,400 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns before being drafted by the Buccaneers in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Throughout his career, Martin played six seasons with Tampa Bay and one season with the Raiders, totaling 5,356 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns.
