Douglas Shep McCain Passes Away at 66

Meghan Markle and her family are grieving the unexpected loss of Douglas Shep McCain, the adopted son of the late Senator John McCain. He was 66 years old.

Doug McCain’s death was reported on Wednesday, though no cause has been disclosed.

Meghan McCain shared her sorrow on social media, stating, “I am deeply saddened to share the news of the sudden passing of my brother Doug McCain.” She reflected on his supportive role in her life and described him as a “wonderful, fun guy.”

She also noted, “He brought humor, fun, and great conversation to every room. I will cherish the memories we shared together. Our prayers are with his wife Ashley and children Caroline and Shep.”

The McCain Institute expressed condolences for the family, stating that Doug, like his father, served as a Navy pilot and would be remembered fondly by many associated with his father’s legacy.

Doug McCain was born on October 4, 1959, in Pensacola, Florida. He grew up in Jacksonville, participating in various sports like surfing and soccer. After graduating from high school in 1977, he went on to study systems engineering at the University of Virginia, where he met his future wife, Ashley Jardine.

After finishing college in 1982, McCain joined the Navy, flying A-6 Intruders for six years before transitioning to a successful career at American Airlines, eventually becoming a captain.

Adopted by Senator John McCain from his first marriage to Carol Shepp McCain, Doug carried on a family legacy of service. His father, a naval aviator, was a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War and served as a senator from Arizona until his death in 2018.

Doug will be remembered not just for his military and professional achievements but also cherished memories. His obituary highlighted his loyalty to friends and family, as well as his love for golf, joking about his nickname “World Book.” He is survived by his wife Ashley of 40 years, daughter Caroline, son Douglas Shepp Jr., and grandson Teddy, along with other family members.

A private family service is planned, and a memorial service will take place on Saturday, May 30th, at the Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
