Remembering Doug Moe: A Coaching Legend

Doug Moe, the iconic coach of the Nuggets, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 87. His influence and legacy in the basketball world were significant, particularly during his ten years in Denver, which were marked by success. He also had coaching stints in San Antonio and Philadelphia.

Before his coaching career, Moe was quite the player himself. He was an ABA All-Star three times from 1968 to 1970 and celebrated a championship win with the Oakland Oaks in 1969. It’s interesting to note that he grew up in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn and often reminisced about his experiences playing at Foster Park. In fact, he once shared that those early days on the court helped him develop a deeper love for the game.

Reflecting on his youth, Moe said, “We would play there after school and on Saturdays until it got dark… I played with much older players and they beat me to the teeth. But I learned a lot.” It’s a sentiment many can relate to—learning through tough competition.

The Nuggets have called Moe “a unique leader,” recognizing that under his guidance, the franchise enjoyed one of its most thrilling and prosperous periods. He served as head coach from 1980 to 1990, notching up 432 wins— a record that stood until it was surpassed by Michael Malone in 2024. During his time, the team qualified for the playoffs nine years in a row, which is no small feat.

In a heartfelt statement, the Nuggets expressed their love for Moe: “A banner commemorating his 432 career wins as a head coach will be hung in the rafters to forever honor his great accomplishments.” They extended their condolences to his wife Jane, son David, and the rest of his family during this difficult time.

Moe’s coaching journey began in 1972 when he became an assistant under Larry Brown with the ABA Carolina Cougars. He later took on his first head coaching job with the Spurs in 1976 and spent several seasons with them before moving to the Nuggets.

After his departure from the Nuggets in 1990, he didn’t return to coaching until 1992 with the 76ers. He made his way back to Denver in the early 2000s, working as a special consultant and assistant coach until 2008.

As former Nuggets player Bill Hanzlik expressed on X, “It’s a sad day in Denver… Doug Moe, who just learned to be one of the absolute best, passed away peacefully this morning holding the hand of his wife Jane Moe.” His impact on the game and the memories he created will surely linger on.
