Dozens of Arrests Made as Police Clear Anti-Israel Encampment at GWU

An anti-Israel tent encampment at George Washington University (GWU) opened early Wednesday morning as police arrested dozens of demonstrators and others left the scene to march toward President Ellen Grunberg’s home. It was removed a few hours later.

Local media reported that police pepper-sprayed some protesters who blocked them from entering the camp, and community organizers said nearly 30 people were arrested.

In a further statement obtained by The Associated Press, the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department said arrests were made for assault on a police officer and trespassing, but many arrests were not immediately made.

The ministry said it moved to disperse the demonstrators due to “gradually increasing instability in the protests.”

GWU’s anti-Israel encampment, set up on April 25, is one of remaining encampments set up on college campuses across the country, in support of the first encampment that began at Columbia University on April 17. It is one.
