Dr. Oz advises Americans on Medicaid to avoid carrot cake amid health insurance cuts affecting millions

Concern Over Medicaid Cuts and Health Insurance

Dr. Mehmet Oz, who is now an administrator at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, recently told Medicaid recipients they “shouldn’t eat carrot cakes,” warning that millions could see cuts to their government-funded health insurance. This statement comes in light of broader changes initiated earlier this month when President Donald Trump signed a significant bill that, among other things, expanded tax cuts and increased border patrol funding while also cutting Medicaid and food assistance programs.

Under the new legislation, many Medicaid recipients will need to provide proof of working at least 80 hours each month through jobs or volunteer work. Reports suggest that around 7.8 million Americans could lose their Medicaid coverage by 2034, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

On a recent show, Fox Business host Stuart Varney and Dr. Oz commemorated the 60th anniversary of Medicare, primarily aimed at assisting older Americans. Varney mentioned that the proposed changes to Medicaid could result in significant coverage losses, stating, “11 million people will lose coverage due to Medicaid changes. That’s going to be a political issue for you, right?”

Dr. Oz, however, expressed skepticism about the numbers, defending Medicare and Medicaid as critical elements of the nation’s social safety net. Without citing specific evidence, he indicated that the focus of the legislation was on addressing “fraud, waste, and abuse” within Medicaid.

He added that if people are healthy and capable of working, they should do so, even if it means reducing their leisure time—like watching TV for over six hours a day.

In a response to Oz’s remarks, Senator Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts criticized the situation, highlighting that 17 million Americans could lose health insurance due to the administration’s policies. She sarcastically noted that Dr. Oz’s advice was simply, “Don’t eat carrot cake.”

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services were approached for comments regarding the ongoing situation.
