Dr. Oz Cautions About a Significant New Challenge for US Health Care

Dr. Oz Discusses Healthcare Spending and Chronic Diseases

Dr. Mehmet Oz, head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), emphasized the importance of effectively using funds to address chronic illnesses in the United States during a recent appearance with Bret Baier on Fox News.

The agenda of the Trump administration’s Health and Human Services (HHS), which aims to “make America healthy again,” includes reversing the trend of chronic diseases. Recently, Casey Means was appointed as the surgeon general, emphasizing nutrition’s role in disease prevention. While discussing American healthcare, Baier asked Oz about his concerns regarding Medicaid and Medicare and how he would address the worries of those affected.

“Our goal is to restore health within health and human services, as emphasized by Secretary Kennedy. The broader our focus, the more effective we will be,” Oz remarked.

He referenced former Democratic vice president Hubert Humphrey, highlighting that the department’s focus is primarily on children, the elderly, and those suffering from illnesses.

Oz reiterated the commitment to improving the quality of care at all levels, stating, “We are collaborating to ensure that quality remains a priority. In every scenario, we are increasing Medicaid payments and investing more in Medicaid.”

Despite continuous claims from Democrats regarding potential cuts to social security, Medicare, or Medicaid by Republicans, President Trump has denied these allegations.

Oz posed a critical question, asking, “How efficiently are we spending this money? It’s essential to address the broader health needs rather than just pouring funds into the existing problems.” He pointed out that a staggering 70% of CMS expenditures relate to chronic illnesses, suggesting that they are not receiving adequate value for the investment.

In November 2024, Trump appointed Oz to lead the CMS, recognizing Kennedy’s relevant healthcare experience and alignment with the administration’s goals. CMS has often been critical of significant corporate entities, particularly in the pharmaceutical sector, although their past connections have raised questions about their stance against large companies.

Oz encouraged everyone to prioritize their health, framing it as a patriotic duty, while also stressing the importance of making sound decisions to protect funds for the populations mentioned by Humphrey.

Following Kennedy’s support of Trump’s campaign, the administration has advocated for a healthier America. Recently, the HHS secretary instructed the FDA to prohibit labeling food ingredients as safe, while also attempting to limit the use of food stamps for purchasing soda and other “junk food.”
