Her publicist, Pierre Leff, confirmed Westheimer’s death on Friday but did not disclose the cause of death.
Born in Germany in 1928, the sex therapist survived the Holocaust and emigrated to the United States in 1956, at the age of 28.
She worked in academia for many years, but rose to fame in 1980 with her New York radio show “Sexual Speaking.” Winnie Communication network.
The star rose to fame with her candid advice on intimacy that helped destigmatize sex for an entire generation of Americans.
Westheimer started out as host of “The Dr. Ruth Show” in 1983 and after success in radio she moved to television.
Over the next few decades, she wrote over 45 books, many of which became bestsellers, and hosted numerous television shows.
Just a year ago, New York Dakota Gov. Kathy Hockle appointed her as the state’s honorary loneliness ambassador.
She is survived by two children and four grandchildren.
