Dr Sanjay Gupta calls on Biden to undergo cognitive testing

Renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Sanjay Gupta on Friday called on President Biden to undergo extensive cognitive and neurological testing and make the results public.

CNN’s top medical correspondent I wrote an editorial for the same media. The outlet reported that more than 10 doctors had contacted the 81-year-old president after his “worrying” performance at last week’s debate, particularly after he appeared to be “speaking incoherently” and “having his mouth open” onstage.

“As a brain specialist, seeing Joe Biden for president was worrying for me, but it quickly became clear that my reaction was not unique to me,” Gupta wrote.

CNN’s top medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, said he was concerned about Biden’s mental state, particularly his “incoherent speech” and “open-mouthed expression” onstage. Reuters

“From a neurological perspective, we were concerned by his disorganized and incoherent speech, sudden losses of concentration mid-sentence, trailing off words and blank facial expressions resulting in his mouth being open at times.”

Medical experts referred to “dementia” and “Parkinson’s disease,” but stressed that they were only offering observations, not actual diagnoses.

“However, the opinion of the doctors who contacted me was that the president should be encouraged to undergo detailed cognitive and motor disability testing, the results of which should be made available to the public,” Gupta said.

Such detailed testing was essential to “determine whether there was a simpler explanation for the symptoms that were presenting or whether there was something more worrisome,” he wrote.

“The country is now closely monitoring this situation and this assessment is a cause for concern and requires transparent testing.”

Gupta’s call comes amid growing concern over the commander in chief’s health following his disastrous confrontation with former President Donald Trump.

Biden himself insisted to Democratic governors on Wednesday that he had undergone a medical check-up after the debate and was in good health.

But the brief visit was merely to check for lingering cold symptoms and “was not a physical exam,” a White House aide later confirmed to The Post.

Meanwhile, the White House has repeatedly rejected calls to release the president’s detailed medical records.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre insisted in February that President Biden “does not need cognitive testing” after undergoing his annual physical.

The examination, which lasted more than two hours, was conducted by a team of 20 doctors who determined the president was in good mental health and did not require any testing, Spocks said at the time.
