Drag queen show honoring Democratic resolution on Oregon House floor faces criticism: 'Political theater'

Oregon House of Representatives Features Drag Performance

In a surprising event, two drag queens performed on the floor of the Oregon House of Representatives Wednesday morning, creating quite a stir among lawmakers.

This unusual occurrence took place to honor a democratic resolution acknowledging the “artistic nature of black drag performers” in Oregon, as stated by Rep. Travis E. Nelson.

Nelson is noted as the first Black LGBTQIA+ member of the House. The performance featured one queen in a striking yellow sparkling jumpsuit and the other in a colorful rainbow dress paired with a blue wig.

Senator Dwayne Yanker expressed confusion over the appropriateness of such a display in a legislative setting. He remarked, “I don’t know if the founding fathers assumed taxpayer-funded legislative spaces would become stages for political theater,” and shared footage of the performance.

Yanker further emphasized that the House Floor should focus on serious discussions and legal matters for all Oregonians, rather than serve as a platform for partisan cultural promotion.

The reaction on social media has been quite varied. Some users voiced their disapproval, stating that the performance was a misuse of taxpayer funds and criticized it as inappropriate, particularly given the seriousness expected from such a space.

One commenter boldly asked for a comprehensive report on the costs incurred from this event, saying, “We don’t fund public workers to put on drag shows. They can do that with their own money.”

Another frustrated parent expressed their disappointment, remarking that while families work hard to improve schools, elected officials engage in such antics in the legislature. “There are no words,” they said.

Conversely, some supporters of the performance celebrated it online. One user simply cheered, “Slayyy,” alongside a Pride flag, while another commented, “Drag shows aren’t just for kids.”

Notably, former President Trump has been vocal about his opposition to drag shows, particularly those that involve children. Earlier this year, he took significant steps against the Kennedy Center, appointing a new board to curtail performances he deemed inappropriate.

As of now, neither Yunker nor the Democrat Caucus in Oregon have responded to requests for comment regarding the incident.
