Drake Maye Faces Struggles in Super Bowl Debut
Drake Maye’s inaugural Super Bowl has quickly spiraled into a challenging situation.
With the New England Patriots down by 12 points against the Seattle Seahawks during the third quarter, Maye lost control of the ball, leading to a fumble late in the game.
This turnover gave the Seahawks a prime opportunity at the Patriots’ 37-yard line, and a touchdown would have pushed their lead to 19-0 and perhaps sealed the game.
“Not the best night for Drake Maye,” remarked Cris Collinsworth as the Patriots prepared to respond to Seattle’s touchdown.
“I had hoped for a standout performance from him, but things didn’t go as planned.”
Maye did manage to throw a touchdown pass on the next drive, narrowing the score to 19-7, but it might be too little, too late.
This Super Bowl marked Maye’s first, and it seems this experience will serve as a significant motivational benchmark—perhaps a low point he’ll reflect on in the future.
Despite a highly celebrated second year in the NFL, where he was even considered for MVP honors, Maye’s performance took a turn in this pivotal matchup.
Over nine total possessions—excluding a kneel at the half—the Patriots managed eight punts coupled with the fumble fiasco.
As chaos unfolded, Maye was unable to connect effectively, garnering only 60 yards across his ten drives, with a disheartening 8-for-18 completion rate.
It seems almost unbelievable, but there it was.
The Seahawks’ defensive front continually exerted pressure, thwarting the usually productive New England offensive line, which prevented Maye from settling into any sort of rhythm.
He suffered five sacks, marking a worrying trend of facing at least four sacks in each of his last four postseason games.
His ground game, which had looked promising before against Denver in the AFC Championship, was limited this time, yielding just 15 yards from three carries.
Coupled with missing several passes and his receiving corps failing to secure many battles, the night only seemed to worsen.
After initially trailing 19-0, Maye finally sparked some energy by delivering a drive that ended with him finding Mack Hollins, but the subsequent possession turned sour with an interception—his second turnover for the game.
