Drake Maye Reflects on Missed Opportunities with Stefon Diggs

During a tough Super Bowl matchup, Drake Maye found himself under constant pressure and, unfortunately, overlooked his top receiver, Stefon Diggs.

Following the Patriots’ 29-13 defeat against the Seahawks, Maye expressed regret over not involving Diggs more in the game. “I really wish I’d thrown to him more often,” he noted, adding that he thinks Diggs shares the sentiment.

In the game, Diggs only managed three receptions for 37 yards from just three targets, which is pretty surprising given their relationship throughout the season. Maye directed a mere 7.3 percent of his 41 pass attempts toward him, which feels low for a player of Diggs’ caliber.

After the game, Maye openly acknowledged, “Diggs has been fantastic for us this year. Honestly, I can’t express enough how much he’s contributed to the team.” Their bond strengthened as the season progressed, leaving them on good terms—especially towards the end.

Diggs had notable performances earlier in the season, including a standout game in Week 16 against the Ravens where he recorded nine catches for 138 yards. He also contributed significantly against the Jets with six catches for 101 yards and a touchdown.

Despite finishing the season with a solid 85 catches for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns—coming off a serious ACL injury—his playoff performance was less impressive. In the postseason, Diggs had a mere 14 catches for 110 yards and one touchdown over four games, with a disappointing single catch for 26 yards in the last one.

“We didn’t perform well,” Diggs admitted after the loss. “There were definitely plays we wish we could have back. It wasn’t our best showing, and we have to own that.” He went on to reflect, “From my perspective, I could’ve given [Maye] more.”

In contrast, Maye seemed to focus his throws on other targets like Mack Hollins and Demario Douglas, who received eight and seven targets, respectively, along with running back LaMondre Stephenson getting five looks.

As for Diggs, who recently signed a three-year contract worth $63.5 million, he and Maye are set to build on their connection in future seasons. “There’s definitely more left in the tank,” Maye said optimistically. “Diggs mentioned he plans to work on his skills over the offseason, which is promising. He didn’t get that opportunity last offseason, but I’m excited to see what he can do moving forward.”
