Universal Music Group, the label of pop star Taylor Swift and rapper Drake, has reportedly signed a new licensing agreement with Chinese app TikTok.
TikTok and Universal Music Group announced Thursday a new deal that will bring UMG label music back to China’s popular video-sharing app after months of inactivity, according to people familiar with the matter. report Written by Axios.
Earlier this year, the music label let its contract with TikTok expire, at which point UMG removed its content from the Chinese social media platform.
Specifically, the companies’ new license agreement will include promotional opportunities and “industry-leading protections” for generative artificial intelligence (AI).
“This new chapter in our relationship with TikTok focuses on the value of music, the primacy of human artistry, and the well-being of our creative community,” said Universal Music Group CEO Lucien Grainge.
While UMG signs a new deal with TikTok, President Joe Biden has announced that the social media platform’s parent company, Chinese tech giant ByteDance, which is beholden to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), will have no more than nine months. signed a bill forcing them to sell apps. Failure to do so may result in a ban in the United States.
