Dre Greenlaw, the standout linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers, was caught in a heated moment with Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton during the first quarter of their game on Sunday, which the 49ers won 24-14.
Greenlaw’s intense interaction with Payton seemed to be rooted in his challenging stint with the Broncos last season, a time that was disappointing for everyone involved.
After the game, Greenlaw addressed the media and threw some shade at Payton when asked about their exchange on the sidelines. “I mean, I just haven’t talked to him in months. Even since I was on the team. So, it’s just a lot,” he remarked. It’s clear that there’s still some tension lingering between them.
Last season, Greenlaw’s relationship with Payton soured after Greenlaw grew dissatisfied with his role upon returning from an injury. The Broncos ultimately decided to release him at the end of the season, allowing him to return to the 49ers, where he previously played for six seasons.
Greenlaw’s comments imply there are still unresolved issues between him and Payton, despite their past connection. Payton himself later commented on their exchange, saying, “I think the world of him,” referring to Greenlaw. He added, “Really, love everything about him. He plays with that emotion. So, all good.”
It seems that while they may respect each other professionally, there are still some things they might need to work through.
