Drew Fortescue Makes Progress in His Second Year

Drew Fortescue has definitely taken strides this season.

As a sophomore at Boston College, he improved significantly and played a key role in helping the Eagles secure the top spot in Hockey East.

Yet, despite these advancements, it wasn’t enough to cement his place with the Rangers, who selected him in the third round of the 2023 draft, 90th overall.

“I had a conversation with the front office, and I believe it’s great for future growth,” said the 20-year-old Fortescue after the first day of the Rangers Developmental Camp at the MSG Training Center. “Right now, I’m focused on getting stronger. My plan is to keep building on that and prepare for next year.”

Interestingly, his college teammate, Gabe Perreault, made a significant move in late March by signing a three-year entry-level contract with the Rangers.

Perreault was picked in the first round of 2023, 23rd overall, and made his NHL debut with the Rangers on April 2.

Fortescue, however, is approaching his career with a sense of patience. He feels it’s sensible to have another solid season in college before making the leap to the pros.

“Of course, that’s the goal,” the Pearl River native admitted when discussing the allure of a professional career. “But I’ve been in touch with the player development staff about what’s best for me, and I think we’re all aligned. My focus is on the upcoming year.”

“We talk to everyone here, and from my perspective, it’s about being ready when the time comes—that’s what they want, too,” he added.

As one of the Rangers’ promising defensive prospects, the 6-foot-1, 176-pound Fortescue wrapped up the 2024-25 season at Boston College with 11 assists and a plus-28 rating over 36 games. It was a solid continuation of his freshman campaign.

“I felt it went well. I think I’ve grown quite a bit since my freshman year,” Fortescue remarked. “I focused on gaining weight and improving my ability to close plays in the corners, and I believe I did a better job with that.”
