Driver helps toddlers out of busy street in brave act: 'I was scared'

Quick-Thinking Driver Rescues Young Girls from Busy Florida Road

On Sunday, a driver in Florida demonstrated remarkable quick thinking when he noticed two young children wandering onto a busy street. John Brittingham was driving south on A1A in Brevard County when he spotted the girls, who seemed to be lost in the chaos of traffic.

Without hesitation, he pulled over, jumped out of his car, and raced toward them, raising one hand to signal cars to stop. “It was terrifying to think about what could have happened,” Brittingham remarked. “My life would have been turned upside down had anything gone wrong.”

In a video captured during this tense moment, Brittingham can be seen sprinting to the children, who appeared to be around two years old and unable to communicate clearly. They were only making noises and gesturing.

He managed to reach them quickly—about six seconds, he estimates—grabbing both girls and pulling them safely away from the roadway.

Following the rescue, Brittingham searched for a nearby home to help return the children to safety. He found an Airbnb and knocked, but no one answered. After walking around the property, he called out and soon noticed that the back gate was open.

Inside the house were an elderly couple and a young woman. Once they realized what had happened, they expressed their relief, saying, “Oh my God, we’re so sorry.” Brittingham felt a weight lifted off his shoulders as he returned the girls to their families.

Having five children and grandchildren of his own, he understood the need to act quickly and didn’t even consider calling the police, as his priority was getting the children back to their parents.

It’s a powerful reminder of how one person’s actions can make a significant difference in a potentially life-threatening situation.
