Driver in Big Sur falls 500 feet off cliff and dies

A driver tragically jumped to his death from a 500-foot cliff in Big Sur on Tuesday, coinciding with a storm impacting the area, according to local authorities.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office noted that the unidentified driver was on Highway 1 near Hurricane Point at about 4:22 p.m. when his vehicle went off course.

A concerned caller reached 911, worried that the car might have plunged into the perilous waters below.

Search and rescue teams from the sheriff’s office, alongside California Highway Patrol officers and Big Sur Fire personnel, located the vehicle resting on jagged rocks over 500 feet down from the road.

Unfortunately, while the rescuers found the car’s occupants, they were declared dead at the scene, and their identities remain undisclosed.

Rescue operations persisted until approximately 8:45 p.m., when they discovered the driver, who was also pronounced dead at the scene.

The remains were taken to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office for identification and family notification.

The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the accident.

Sheriff Tina Nieto mentioned that the harsh weather conditions complicated the emergency response, stating, “The strong winds required search and rescue personnel to implement extra safety measures during the operation.”

Highway 1, which winds through the scenic Big Sur area, is known for its stunning views, but it also presents dangers like steep cliffs and unstable soils. Recent landslides have led to road closures, which are expected to remain in effect until January.
