Driver survives 100-foot plunge into Long Island Sound during police chase

The driver led police on a 45-minute chase on New York’s Long Island before falling off a 100-foot cliff into Long Island Sound, but survived, police said.

Monday’s car chase began when police responded to a domestic violence call in Southold on Far East Long Island, Police Chief Martin Flatley told Newsday.

Police say the man sped off at speeds of 160 mph as he drove back and forth across eastern Long Island.

“You never hit the brakes, you never slow down,” Flatley told the newspaper. “It hit the embankment at the end of the street, went over the cliff, went into the air, went off the beach and into Long Island Sound.”

The car landed in 3 to 5 feet of water. Police said officers arrived, pulled the driver out and arrested him.
