A driver recently survived what could have been a deadly plunge, experiencing only minor injuries after falling nearly 300 feet off a Colorado highway. The incident took place on October 9 along Route 550 in Ouray, as reported by the Ouray Mountain Rescue Team on social media.
Rescue teams rushed to the scene around 12:20 p.m. after receiving reports of a pickup truck that had fallen into the Uncompahgre River Gorge. First responders from the local EMS, volunteer fire department, and rescue team set up a rope system to reach the lone occupant of the vehicle.
Remarkably, the driver emerged with only minor injuries. Rescuers later shared images showing the damaged vehicle and the driver, who was assisted back onto the highway with their help.
People reacted to the news online, expressing surprise and relief. Comments ranged from sentiments about the driver needing to buy a lottery ticket due to their luck, to awe at the fact that the injuries were so minimal considering the circumstances.
According to the Town of Ouray, U.S. Highway 550, often called the “Million Dollar Highway,” is noted for its breathtaking yet perilous terrain. While the road attracts numerous adventure seekers, it has garnered an alarming reputation for being among the most dangerous roads in the U.S. due to its narrow lanes, sharp turns, and absence of guardrails. Although it can be treacherous, adhering to speed limits and remaining vigilant can help ensure safe travel.
Local media noted that this summer had witnessed two fatalities on the same highway, underlining the importance of caution on this scenic route.
