Drone crashes into Boston Celtics watch party on NBA’s opening night, several injured

Bostonians gathered at City Hall Plaza to watch the Boston Celtics' opening night watch party and celebrate the team's recent NBA championship Tuesday night when a drone struck them, leaving many injured. At least one person was taken to the hospital.

Boston police said at least three people suffered non-life-threatening injuries when a drone fell outside the plaza around 7:30 p.m., just as the Celtics were playing the New York Knicks.

Youssef Kobisi, who was struck by the drone, told Boston 25 that it sounded like a “thud” when the drone hit.

“I hear a loud noise. It's a banging sound. All of a sudden I felt like something sharply hit my head here. I was very scared at first because there was a loud noise, but then I heard something sharp… It felt like something hit me on the head, and then I heard a woman's voice. I heard a scream next to me and I was about to fall,” Kobisi said.

A woman was taken away on a stretcher after being hit by a drone, witnesses said on Tuesday in Boston.

“For about an hour and a half, I stood there in shock. I was like, 'Oh my god,'” Derek Skrima said. the drone claimed I cut two fingers during the collision.

“I was completely caught off guard and I was scared because I thought I might have two fingers cut off,” Skrima said.

TNT, which broadcast the game on Tuesday night, issued a statement following the incident.

“Unfortunately, an accident occurred involving a fan and a drone who were attending tonight's event. Medical and safety personnel on scene responded to the situation immediately. We are currently conducting further investigations and would like to express our sincere condolences to everyone involved. We wish you all the best,” the network said in a release.

Tuesday was the opening game of the NBA 2024-25 season. The Celtics won the NBA title last season in five games against the Dallas Mavericks.

The Celtics won a league record 18 times. Prior to Tuesday night's tipoff, the Celtics celebrated last season's team with a ring ceremony and another banner display.
