Federal health officials are warning of a drug even more deadly than fentanyl, which has caused numerous deaths.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned Thursday that a modified version of fentanyl, known as carfentanil, is believed to be 100 times more potent than the drug fentanyl that is entering the U.S.'s southern border, Fox News reported on tuesday.
The article states that “nearly 70% of U.S. overdose deaths last year were believed to be due to illegally manufactured fentanyl (IMF),” including carfentanil. He added that the number of deaths caused by the virus has skyrocketed by more than 700% by 2024.
CDC warning said Carfentanil is “re-emerging in the U.S. drug supply,” he said, citing data from the CDC's state unintentional drug overdose reporting system.

In 2013, illegally manufactured fentanyl and fentanyl analogs (IMF) entered the U.S. illicit drug supply as an adulterant or substitute for white powder heroin in the Northeast and have now replaced heroin as the primary drug supply in the United States. It has become an opioid (1). With the introduction of the IMF, the number of overdose deaths skyrocketed. This is probably due to its high potency and rapid onset of effects (2,3). In 2023, it is estimated that approximately 72,000 drug overdose deaths, or nearly 7 in 10, will involve fentanyl, which is primarily manufactured illegally.
